The island of Elba can be reached by embarking at Piombino Marittima, where four shipping companies (Toremar, Blu Navy, Moby Lines and Corsica Ferries) have comfortable ferries that make several trips a day.
It is necessary only one hour of navigation to cover the approximately 10 kilometers that separate the island from the mainland, reaching the ports of Portoferraio (the main), Cavo and Rio Marina.
Alternatively there is a fast connection with hydrofoil, for passenger transport only, which reaches Portoferraio in just 35 minutes.
- By car:
From North: From Milan, take the A1 motorway to Parma Ovest on the A15 to reach the A12 Genova-Livorno motorway, exit at Rosignano, continue on S.S. Aurelia up to Venturina-Isola d’Elba and from here to Piombino Marittima.
From North-East: Highway A1 Bologna-Florence-Pisa-Livorno: exit at Rosignano, continue on S.S. Aurelia up to Venturina-Isola d’Elba and from here to Piombino Marittima.
Alternatively, the S.G.C. Florence-Pisa-Livorno: exit at Scandicci Florence and follow the S.S. up to Collesalvetti, go back on the motorway at Rosignano Marittima, take the highway to Venturina-Isola d’Elba and from there to Piombino Marittima.
From South: Highway A12 Rome-Grosseto: S.S. Aurelia exit Venturina-Isola d’Elba, continue towards Piombino Marittima.
- By bus:
Firenze – Elba: there is a scheduled service with BUSITALIA – SITA Nord between Piombino Marittima and Florence that in just 2 hours and 40 minutes ensures a direct connection between the port of Piombino and the city of Florence. Ideal to get to Elba without the car especially in summer. During the summer, the service has a daily schedule.
The departure from Florence is at the SITA AUTOSTAZIONE, in Via Santa Caterina da Siena 17 (exiting the Santa Marina Novella Station on the right). In Piombino the terminus is PIOMBINO PORTO.

Milano – Elba: two companies connect Milan to the port of Piombino: Lineservizi (with intermediate stops at San Giuliano Mil., Melegnano, Lodi, Casalpusterlengo, Piacenza, Piacenza south / Autostrade A1 – A15 – A12, Marina di Bibbona, Marina di Castagneto, Donoratico and S. Vincenzo) and Maremmetour.
Grosseto – Elba: the service is served by the Maremmetour departing from Porto Santo Stefano. The journey takes 2 hours and 30 minutes.
- By plane:
The Island of Elba is easily reachable also by plane; in fact there is a small airport near Marina di Campo, in La Pila, where, during the summer, there are links with many Italian and European cities.
The companies operating on this airport are Elbafly and Intersky that connect the island with Germany, Switzerland and Austria with direct flights from Zurich, Vienna, Berlin, Munich, Hamburg and Dussendorf.

The arrival station for ferry embarkation is that of Piombino Marittima, reachable by a short railway line from Campiglia Marittima, a small station on the route that connects Rome and Grosseto to Livorno and Pisa.
